Obtaining a Mathematica License

The default installation uses a network license server. Disconnected users (laptops) will be given standalone license files.

Students: We are not authorized to issue licenses to students.

Network License

Using a network license is as simple as registering your computer with the network license servers, and telling Mathematica to use the network license servers. This method is very simple to setup and is suitable for all computers with permanent network connections. We need to know the hostname of your computer to register it with the license servers. The method of determining the hostname varies according to the operating system, as summarized in the table below. Please see the page for your particular operating system for more details.

Platform Hostname
Macintosh Fully-qualified IP name.
Mac OS X hostname
UNIX and Linux hostname ( uname -n )
MS Windows DNS hostname

You will provide us with the hostname of your computer when you enroll and we will then authorize your computer on the campus license servers.

During installation enter 128.36.236.34 as the network license server.
Then replace your mathpass file with a new one from:

ftp://ftp2.wss.yale.edu/pub/licensed

or edit the mathpass file to include all 3 license servers as follows:

!128.36.236.34
!128.36.236.21
!130.132.232.125

Please contact WSS if you need any assistance.

Standalone Licenses

Standalone licenses allow your computer to run Mathematica without a network connection. This type of license is not available for Departmental or Cluster enrollments because of the increased administrative overhead.

Standalone licenses are managed by means of a MathID and password . The MathID is a number determined by Mathematica which is unique to your computer. Your MathID is the first 16 characters of your Mathematica "mathpass" file, similar to 5621-56033-00120. For help locating your mathpass file, please see:

mathpasslocation

The MathID is submitted to Wolfram Research, Inc., who will then issue a password. The password is tied cryptographically to the MathID, license number, and the expiration date of the license. Licenses must be renewed annually so you must obtain a new password every year.

You may obtain a standalone Mathematica password for your enrolled computer by sending e-mail to mathematica@yale.edu with your MathID, operating system, and hostname. Please do not register directly with Wolfram Research since that will delay processing while we verify your enrollment.
