Installing Mathematica on MS Windows

Enrollment

All computers must be enrolled in the site license program and must be registered with the network license server before they may run Mathematica.

Windows Installation

You may install a complete Windows 98/NT/2000/XP version of Mathematica 6 from the campus network. If you want to install a previous release, please send mail to: mathematica@yale.edu and let us know.

The following instructions for Windows are geared for users who can use "Microsoft Networking" on their Windows PCs. Please contact your local support provider for further assistance.

You want to access the server Babs in the ITS-WSS domain. You have 2 options:

Option 1) Open a command prompt window on your machine. Then type

net use * \\babs.its.yale.edu\Mathematica6 /user:yale\ NetID

Substitute your own NetID in place of NetID . Enter your password if it is requested. If this command succeeds, it will mount the Mathematica share as a drive letter on your computer. A message will tell you what the assigned drive letter is. If it is G: , for example, you can find the MS-Windows Installer in G:\PC .

Option 2) Start > Run > \\babs.its.yale.edu\Mathematica6

If prompted, sign in as yale\your_NetID & provide your password. A window will open displaying the contents of the Mathematica share. The distribution for MS-Windows is in \\babs.its.yale.edu\Mathematica6\mma6.0\mma6win\Windows

For either option: Click on setup.exe to begin the process. You can choose several different strategies for loading. If you have enough disk space, you can load the whole system including documentation. If not, you may install a "minimal system".

Network-based installation:

During installation, you will be asked to enter licensing information. Most users will choose a network based installation and enter the IP 128.36.236.34 as the network license server. During the installation, a license file named "mathpass" is created. If you chose the default destination, the file is located here:

C:\Program Files\Wolfram Research\Mathematica\6.0\Configuration\Licensing

After the installation is done, you need to replace this mathpass file with the mathpass file found here:

ftp://wss.yale.edu/pub/licensed

Standalone licenses:

Stand-alone licenses are available if needed for faculty laptop and home users. Students are not eligible for standalone licenses. Please note: Standalone licenses expire yearly on September 1st. Contact WSS for assistance.
